HA5 - Task 5 Evaluation

Evaluation:

Overall, I believe that HA5 went well, with a few of my strongest pieces of artwork being produced during the completion of this unit. However, there were several weak pieces of work I produced, during the duration of this unit, that leave much to be desired.

Firstly, I began with Task 1. During this task, I had to provide visual and written research into a chosen character and genre, in this case, Johnathyn Bearswick and the medieval times being the former and the latter. I believe my performance in this task was good enough to achieve the level of quality I initially aspired to obtain, and was one of my best tasks within this unit.

Secondly, I began with Task 2. During this task, I was required to provide multiple concepts for my final Illustrations, in preparation for creating them. I drew various concepts for the interior and exterior settings, for my character and the characters equipment. My art style for this task remained the same, rather than using different art styles.

After the completion of Task 2, I moved onto Task 3. For this task, the aim was to provide final illustrations of my chosen character, settings and equipment. I aimed in this task to provide better quality illustrations, and to aim for detail in comparison to my work in Task 2. I believe I accomplished this. The illustrations in this task also had colour applied to them to improve their quality.

Upon Task 3's completion, I moved onto Task 4. In Task 4, I was required to sign a legal and ethical checklist, which was provided via a template on SCC Moodle. I filled in the template by signing and dating it, and after taking a picture of it via the Windows snipping tool, I put it on the blog.

Overall, I believe my work on this task was done to an acceptable standard. I feel that I completed certain tasks to a greater standard than others during the duration of this unit. I feel that in future, I should try to improve the standard of my practical work and experiment and practice with different art styles in my spare time, so that I am capable of more in regards to my art skills. My effort throughout I believe was lacking and I should put more time into my work outside of college sessions.

HA5 - Task 2 Development Studies

I began my exploratory drawings by drawing ideas for Johnathyn Bearswicks equipment. The three main items used by Bearswick are a sword, a pistol and playing cards. As such, I drew several exploratory drawings of each item.

Once I had done the exploratory drawings for the objects, I began drawing ideas for Johnathyn Bearswick. I drew 2 exploratory drawings for Johnathyn Bearswick, with him having different outfit designs in both of the drawings.

For the outside concept of my dungeon, I chose for a very simple design, due to the dungeon by nature having no windows or fancy architecture, which gives the outside a very basic look. Any advanced design would be the interior of the dungeon.

The interior concept had a more complex and detailed design than the exterior concept, however, not by much. In the final piece, my aim is to go for more complex designs and to try to achieve a higher level of detail when it comes down to my environments.

HA5 - Task 1 Reference Research

Chosen Setting: 01 - Medieval Castle Dungeon

Chosen Character:  02 - Jonathyn Bearswick

Equipment:   Sword and Belt, Pistol and a set of playing cards.

In order to get references for my chosen characters and setting, I  looked at and researched Errol Flynn, Lord of the Rings, and Robin Hood. I also researched the equipment Johnathyn Bearswick would have and found many examples.

Errol Flynn was known primarily for his role as Robin Hood in the 1938 film 'The Adventures of Robin Hood'. His role was similar to my chosen character, because they are both 'medieval mavericks' and has a noticeable and colourful look.  They are both 'swashbucklers' and are associated with gangs of outlaws, in Robin Hoods case, The Merry Men.

Robin Hood is portrayed as a knight turned outlaw who's gang of thieves steal from the rich and give to the poor. He is considered a swashbuckler and is portrayed as being a skilled warrior and a charismatic diplomat, being able to both fight and talk his way out of any situation. He is similar to my chosen character and he seems to be the biggest inspiration in the characters creation.

Lord of the Rings is somewhat similar to my setting, due to its medieval nature, however, the Lord of the Rings has a greater emphasis on fantasy, opposed to romanticized swashbuckling. However, certain characters are similar to Jonathyn such as Aragorn, who is a a man born of high society parents who chose a path of  the outlaw, in Aragorns case, he became the Strider who guarded the people of the Shire just like Robin Hood guarded the people of Nottingham.

Just like Lord of the Rings, the hero has their group that follows them to the ends of the earth, which in the Lord of the Rings case, is the Fellowship of the Ring. Robin Hoods group, is of course, the well known Merry Men.

The character of Jonathyn Bearswick is similar to a swashbuckler. Swashbuckler is a sub genre of film, based off of the action genre. They are well known for their sword fights, charismatic characters and sharp and well written story.

The equipment my character will have will include a sword and belt, a pistol, and a set of playing cards.

The examples I have shown above, will be my basis for designing the equipment for Johnathyn Bearswick.

The chosen setting is within a medieval castle dungeon, and as such, I researched dungeons from numerous Video Games and Movies.

I first researched dungeons from The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Each main city within the game has their own dungeon, each being different and well designed. Seen below are examples of dungeons within the game.

Upon looking up dungeons within video games, I looked for dungeons in other types of media.

HA4 - Task 1 The Purpose of Concept Art

Exploration:
Exploration in the concept art process, is when numerous artistic ideas are created and the flaws within the exploration concept are corrected. This entire stage is done internally. This part of the process is needed for the artists to explore many concepts before they are finalized in order to send off to the publishers and partners.

Approval: The approval part of the concept art process is when the art is green lit from both the publishers and partners. They decide whether the concept art is ready to be used for promotional purposes and if they suit the design of the game itself, and represent the games overall artistic design.  This part of the process is done by the partners and publishers.

Promotion:  This part of the process is when the concept art is released publicly in order to generate hype and anticipation for the upcoming game the concept art is for. This is the public stage of the entire process. and is intended to publicly show the art style of the game and to draw in potential buyers if they like the art enough.
